Accessible Courtyard House

This is a Concept Design our firm developed for a 300 s.f. tiny house. We noticed that tiny house competitions do not typically generate accessible plans. But because universal design is part of our day-to-day creation process, we believe even tiny house designs should be inclusive and accessible — so we addressed this in a recent competition. The tight floor plan did present some challenges: how to maintain a compressed plan and still allow for accessible areas? As well, we wanted to determine a way to make the design modular. Our Concept Design divides the different domestic activities into 7’-0” x 10’-0” s.f. sections that could be built in a warehouse and then shipped to site, allowing clients to either build the sections themselves or have a builder create them off site. A local contractor is interested in building the design.
